In America, the congress passed a legislation, known as the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1987 (OBRA – 1987), which require all states to initiate and maintain Nurse Aide Training, Competency Evaluation Test and Nurse Aide Registries by setting specific training and evaluation standards for nurse aides who work in long term care units, nursing homes, hospitals and other health care facilities.

The OBRA legislation also made it necessary for the North Carolina, N.C. Health Care Personnel Registry Section to oversee the CNA Training in North Carolina.

In order to get listing with N.C. Nurse Aide I Registry, it is essential for a student to complete state approved Nurse Aide I training and Pass state approved Nurse Aide I competency test.

Nurse Aide I Training Programs in NC comprises of 75 hours duration including, classroom theoretical course instruction and clinical hands-on training. The programs are instructed in various community and vocational colleges, high schools, long term care facilities and career making institutes.

The subjects learned during training program include:

• General nursing skills
• Emergency care and safety
• Restorative care
• Infection control
• Basic diagnostic skills
• Communication and Interpersonal skills
• Personal Care skills
• Adult care
• Other skills

The programs are completed under the direct supervision of RN or LPN.
